CULVER CITY, California — Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is a reboot of the Shantae series that began on the GameBoy Color (total #tbt material) in 2002.
Using her hair as her primary weapon, the player must maneuver Shantae through a side-scroller platforming world whilst avoiding or defeating enemies and collecting gems. The world is full of challenges Shantae can’t overcome in her human-like form, however, so she must put her belly-dancing skills to the test in order to transform into a variety of animals.
Transforming into a monkey allows Shantae to jump higher and climb vertical surfaces, while changing into a crab allows her to go underwater and protect herself with a shell. Be careful, though, as Shantae can’t attack while in these forms. A developer hints that certain creatures, of which they plan to have 10 or 11, will be able to attack.
These creatures aren’t all available from the start, of course, and WayForward Technologies promises secrets hidden throughout levels will give players reason to replay them once other formations are unlocked.
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero will release this winter on, as one developer says, “pretty much all platforms.”
