A few weeks ago, Marvel revealed artwork showing the opposing superhero teams that will duke it out in the upcoming phase 3 film Captain America: Civil War.
What do you see in these team line-ups? Besides the fact that Iron Man’s team is absolutely stacked with high-powered sluggers, that is?
A distinct lack of Scarlet Witch.
Emily Olsen’s enhanced enchanter was last seen at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron filling out a space on Captain America’s new Avengers roster. One would expect that means she will side with the star-spangled hero’s crew of spies and soldiers. But Black Widow and The Vision, also members of Cap’s new Avengers team, are shown on #TeamIronMan alongside War Machine and Black Panther.
Stepping in to clear up absolutely nothing, Olsen told MTV News that her character is “doing alright. They released images of Team Cap and Team Iron Man. She wasn’t there. She’s always the wild card. I like being the wild card.” #TeamWildCard
While Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk are not show in the artwork either, Scarlet Witch’s absence is much more noticeable. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in great need of female characters who rise above the role of love interest or damsel-in-distress.
Alhough Thor and Tony Stark share a cute moment in Age of Ultron bickering about whose significant other is more successful, it would be nice if Marvel films would show these successful women rather than just mention them.
